Vaudeville Rendez-Vous International Festival
The Vaudeville Rendez-Vous International Festival is now in its 4th edition with a rich and vibrant artistic programme, organised by Teatro da Didascália, which is putting the cities of Braga, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão in the centre of the development of, and reflection on, the contemporary circus.
This festival is the biggest and most influential contemporary circus festival in the North region, and it welcomes, for four consecutive days, 21 presentations of the ten programmed shows, among which are two co-productions in absolut premiere and six national premières.
This year’s edition presents artistic proposals that point to finding new forms, and reinvent the aesthetic patterns that we usually link to circuses, through hybrid shows, which subvert the traditional apparatus and techniques in an innovative way.
Some of these provocative works come to us by the hand of four laureate projects by one of the most important international platforms for the support and monitoring of emerging artists in the field of contemporary circus – CircusNext. Teatro da Didascália is an associated partner of this international platform, which is co-organised by Centro Cultural Vila Flor.
Under the scope of the work that the Festival has been doing in supporting the development and internationalisation of the contemporary circus in Portugal, we are promoting for the first time a cross-border co-production in partnership with the Italian association Sarabanda, where three Portuguese performers participate under the direction of Boris Vecchio. The show Sentido will be developed in-residence for the Festival, where it will make its world première. It will then tour in Turin and Genoa, Italy.
An additional highlight is the presentation of Demudar, another of the Festival’s co-productions, with the artistic direction of Hugo Oliveira and performed by the first-year students of INAC – Instituto Nacional de Artes do Circo (National Institute of Circus Arts). This is the first result of a strong collaboration between the Vaudeville Rendez-Vous International Festival and INAC, a training structure in the area of circus arts that has recently been implemented in the North of the country.
Workshops and Awareness Sessions
Alongside the presentations, the festival promotes a series of workshops with the aim of raising the awareness of the local community about the complexity of circus languages. Three workshops will be held, one for each of the three main pillars of circus arts: juggling, balance and aerial acrobatics.
Still under the scope of parallel actions, it is important to highlight the 2nd edition of Cabaret Showcase, a moment that we consider to be essential for the continuity of the work we have been developing in promoting and disseminating national artists, together with Portuguese and international programme makers.
Wanting to raise awareness for the new forms of supporting the contemporary circus, we are holding a debate to look at the panorama of the different support models developed by the five guest institutions of this 4th edition – La Central Del Circ (Barcelona), Biennale Internationale des Arts du Cirque (Marseille), Circus Centrum (Gent), CircusNext (Europe) and Circus City (Bristol).
Inhabit the City
Taking advantage of the rich cultural heritage of the three cities involved, we have challenged the audience to visit the cultural facilities of this territory, through the Visite Também (Also Visit) programme, with several suggestions associated with each presentation.
July is ever more a synonym of circus in the streets and squares of this triangle where, for two editions now, this International Contemporary Circus Festival has been balancing itself.
Come out into the streets and experience your city upside down!
